Playing Seven against Paradox
Everything below is generated for Deadlock patch 09-16-2026 from Paradox's current kit, a kit-based model and a mechanics rule base. Each line carries its own confidence label.
Quick summary
- Threat
- High threat
- Main problem
- Paradoxical Swap yanks you out of your team and drops you alone next to hers, for 150 spirit-scaling damage, from up to 13m further away at T2 than you expect.
- Your main advantage
- You have no clean statistical edge here — this one is decided by who uses their cooldowns better, not by the kits.
- Primary rule
- Do not commit before Time Wall is gone. Time Wall first. It is her anti-dive and her projectile shield; force it with a feint and then commit, because with it down she has no way to stop a gap-close.
- Key item
- Debuff Reducer — Paradox gives this team real stuns and hard cc. The standard early buy when the enemy team chains crowd control; it is also the component for Spellbreaker and Unstoppable.
Strategic No measured result for this specific pairing, so this rating comes from the kit model: 6.6/12 pressure. The largest single factor is lockdown versus your disengage — Paradox crowd control 3/3 against your disengage 0/3. Derived from trait ratings. Shown because this pairing was not in the harvested win-rate dataset.
What should I do right now?
Before lane
Do
- Plan for Debuff Reducer — know which tier it sits in so you are not improvising at the shop.
- Know what Time Wall looks like. It is the cooldown this lane revolves around.
Avoid
- Walking to lane on the same path every wave against a hero with Paradox's engage range.
During lane
Do
- No self-healing at all — she has no way to recover from a losing trade except leaving lane.
- 730 HP with no defensive layer until Paradoxical Swap T1's barrier, so a committed dive kills her.
- Lightning Ball clears a full trooper wave and chips the enemy laner in the same cast, giving Seven one of the best last-hit-plus-poke buttons in the game
Avoid
- A 40-round burst-fire clip gives her good lane staying power without frequent reloads.
- Pulse Grenade denies the trooper wave and the orb contest simultaneously, and the stacking amp punishes anyone who stands in it to farm.
Mid game
Do
- Their first real spike is Paradoxical Swap unlock — respect it from that point, not before.
- Your spike is ult unlock: Storm Cloud immediately converts Seven from a farmer into an objective-control hero; any uncontested cast on a grouped team wins the fight
Avoid
- Taking an even fight against Paradox on their spike timing when you could take the same fight ten minutes later on yours.
Teamfights
Do
- Watch for Paradoxical Swap. It is a travelling projectile, not an instant target lock — sidestep it or break line of sight and a 110s ultimate is gone.
- Dodge the swap projectile. It travels and can be sidestepped or blocked by line of sight; a dodged Paradoxical Swap costs her 110 seconds.
Avoid
- Spending your own escape before Time Wall is on cooldown.
Abilities to watch
- Paradoxical Swap Ultimate
This is the ability that actually kills you — The displacement itself is the control effect — there is no stun attached at base. Everything else in the kit is set up by it.
- It is a travelling projectile, not an instant target lock — sidestep it or break line of sight and a 110s ultimate is gone.
- After the swap SHE is standing where you were, usually alone next to your team. Turn and kill her rather than panicking about your new position.
- Do not stand in her Pulse Grenade's likely landing zone; the swap is only lethal because of what she swapped you into.
- Kinetic Carbine Ability 3
This is the ability that actually kills you — A time-stop on the target — functionally a stun. Duration not sourced. Everything else in the kit is set up by it.
- It is a charged skillshot with a visible wind-up and an audible cue. Break line of sight during the charge and she either loses the shot or fires it uncharged for 10% damage after the 09-16-2026 nerf.
- Strafe unpredictably while she is charging; the projectile has travel time and she must lead you.
- Force her to fire early by threatening her — a charged carbine she cannot safely hold is a wasted 28s cooldown.
- Pulse Grenade Ability 1
This is the ability that actually kills you — Time slow on each pulse — a movement slow that compounds while you remain inside. Everything else in the kit is set up by it.
- Leave immediately on the first pulse. Both the radius and the damage amp grow, so the cost of staying is non-linear — the third second is far worse than the first.
- The grenade is stationary and clearly visible on the ground; do not path through the area she has already seeded.
- If she has it down and you are outside it, that is the moment to engage her directly — it is her main zoning tool on a 32s cooldown.
- Time Wall Ability 2
This is the ability that actually kills you — Brief slow plus a silence on contact (2.3s silence at T2). Everything else in the kit is set up by it.
- Walk around it rather than through it — the silence and slow only apply on contact, and its width is finite even at T1.
- Melee range and close-quarters pressure ignore the projectile-blocking entirely; a shotgun hero standing on her side of the wall is unaffected.
- Do not fire into it. Every bullet stopped is free value for her; hold fire and reposition to an angle the wall does not cover.
Abilities to bait — in this order
- 1. Time Wall
Time Wall first. It is her anti-dive and her projectile shield; force it with a feint and then commit, because with it down she has no way to stop a gap-close.
- 2. Kinetic Carbine
Kinetic Carbine second — make her release an uncharged shot for the reduced 10% minimum, which both wastes the damage and puts the time-stop on a 28s cooldown.
- 3. Pulse Grenade
Pulse Grenade third: make her use it as wave clear or as a panic self-peel rather than as the pre-placed damage zone the swap combo needs.
Matchup overview
- Their structural weakness: Underperforming by measured results: deadlocklabs.gg records 46.8% win rate at 3.1% pick, B tier across 490,246 matches, with the rate flat over recent weeks. Why this is shown: Paradox's weaknesses. Strong evidence
- Their structural weakness: The 09-16-2026 patch cut Kinetic Carbine's minimum damage multiplier from 25% to 10%, punishing anything but a fully-held charge. Why this is shown: Paradox's weaknesses. Strong evidence
- Their structural weakness: Zero sustain and low durability; she loses any fight she cannot control from range. Why this is shown: Paradox's weaknesses. Strong evidence
- Neither of you can disengage well, so fights between you tend to go to completion. That makes the decision to start one much more important than anything you do inside it — commit only when you already have the advantage, because backing out is not available to either side. Why this is shown: Both heroes have mobility 0-1; low disengage on both sides. Strategic
What they do against you
- Paradoxical Swap yanks you out of your team and drops you alone next to hers, for 150 spirit-scaling damage, from up to 13m further away at T2 than you expect. Why this is shown: Authored from Paradox's kit. Strong evidence
- The standard pattern is a pre-placed Pulse Grenade and then a swap into it — you arrive already inside expanding pulses that stack a damage amp against you. Why this is shown: Authored from Paradox's kit. Strong evidence
- Kinetic Carbine is a full time-stop on hit, so a landed charged shot means every one of her teammates gets a free window on you. Why this is shown: Authored from Paradox's kit. Strong evidence
- Time Wall deletes your projectiles and silences you for 2.3s on contact at T2, so channelled ultimates and casts simply do not happen through it. Why this is shown: Authored from Paradox's kit. Strong evidence
- At Paradoxical Swap T3 she swaps everyone within 7m of the target and adds 10% max health damage — grouping up becomes a liability against her. Why this is shown: Authored from Paradox's kit. Strong evidence
- You are exactly the target Paradox is looking for — low durability, no exit. Expect them to ignore your frontline entirely and open on you, and to do it at the moment your team's attention is elsewhere. Your positioning has to assume they are already past your tank. Why this is shown: Enemy backline-threat tag against a hero with durability and escape both 0-1. Strong evidence
- Paradox can silence, which means your escape is only real if it is already active. Pre-empt rather than react: if you are walking into a position where the silence lands, your defensive cooldown should be spent getting out of that position, not saved for after. Why this is shown: Silence prevents ability and item use, invalidating reactive defensive cooldowns. Strong evidence
How you counter them
- Dodge the swap projectile. It travels and can be sidestepped or blocked by line of sight; a dodged Paradoxical Swap costs her 110 seconds. Why this is shown: Authored counterplay against Paradox. Strong evidence
- If you do get swapped, immediately turn and fight HER rather than trying to run — she is now isolated next to your team with 730 HP and, at most, a 200 barrier from T1. Why this is shown: Authored counterplay against Paradox. Strong evidence
- Break line of sight while she is charging Kinetic Carbine. Post-09-16-2026 an uncharged shot only does 10% minimum damage, so forcing an early release nearly nullifies it. Why this is shown: Authored counterplay against Paradox. Strong evidence
- Walk around Time Wall rather than shooting into it, and close to melee/shotgun range where projectile-blocking does nothing. Why this is shown: Authored counterplay against Paradox. Strong evidence
- Leave Pulse Grenade on the first pulse — the radius expands and the damage amp stacks, so each additional second inside costs disproportionately more. Why this is shown: Authored counterplay against Paradox. Strong evidence
- Spread out once she has her ultimate at T3; the 7m group swap is only devastating against a clustered team. Why this is shown: Authored counterplay against Paradox. Strong evidence
- Paradoxical Swap is one cast aimed at one person and that person is likely you, which changes the shape of the answer. Effective health is the wrong axis — a hero who can pick you out of a fight will simply wait until the number is beatable. Counterspell negates a single ability outright, which against a one-cast threat is a hundred percent mitigation for 3,200, and the read is easier than it sounds because a single-target ultimate has to be aimed at you to work. Why this is shown: Counterspell negates one ability; enemy single-target ultimate against a hero with durability 0-1. Strategic
- You cannot out-move Paradox's gun, so the answer is the item that changes what their bullets do rather than where you stand. Plated Armor deflects bullets outright and — the part most players miss — strips their on-hit build-ups, which is the only clean answer to Silencer, Toxic Bullets and Inhibitor stacks landing on you. If 6,400 is too far away, Battle Vest at +18% Bullet Resist is the efficient Tier II step and Bullet Resilience at +30% (with a further +15% below half health) the Tier III one. Why this is shown: Plated Armor deflects bullets and strips on-hit build-ups; Battle Vest +18% and Bullet Resilience +30% are the T2/T3 stat steps. Strong evidence
Trading
- Immediately after Paradoxical Swap, when she is standing alone in the position your team was covering, with only a T1 barrier between her and death. Why this is shown: Paradox's vulnerability windows. Strong evidence
- The Kinetic Carbine charge window — she is committed to an aim line, moving predictably, and cannot use her gun. Why this is shown: Paradox's vulnerability windows. Strong evidence
- Time Wall on cooldown before T3 grants extra charges; she has no other tool to stop a projectile or a dive. Why this is shown: Paradox's vulnerability windows. Strong evidence
- Any moment she is inside gap-close range with no Pulse Grenade down — she has no sustain, no escape ability and 730 HP. Why this is shown: Paradox's vulnerability windows. Strong evidence
- The full 110s Paradoxical Swap cooldown before T2 reduces it; she is a poke-and-zone hero with no pick potential for that entire period. Why this is shown: Paradox's vulnerability windows. Strong evidence
- When Paradox puts up a barrier, do not reset the trade and wait for it to drop. Overflow damage carries through to health, so a single large hit spends the barrier and keeps going in one action — there is no wasted remainder. What does get wasted is chip, because barriers decay on their own and small hits are exactly what a temporary pool absorbs for free. Either commit your burst through it or disengage entirely; the middle option gives them a free absorb. Why this is shown: Barriers sit in front of health with overflow carrying through, and decay over time. Strong evidence
Laning
- What they want in lane: A 40-round burst-fire clip gives her good lane staying power without frequent reloads. Why this is shown: Paradox's laning strengths. Strong evidence
- What they want in lane: Pulse Grenade denies the trooper wave and the orb contest simultaneously, and the stacking amp punishes anyone who stands in it to farm. Why this is shown: Paradox's laning strengths. Strong evidence
- What you can take from them in lane: No self-healing at all — she has no way to recover from a losing trade except leaving lane. Why this is shown: Paradox's laning weaknesses. Strong evidence
- What you can take from them in lane: 730 HP with no defensive layer until Paradoxical Swap T1's barrier, so a committed dive kills her. Why this is shown: Paradox's laning weaknesses. Strong evidence
- Your lever: Lightning Ball clears a full trooper wave and chips the enemy laner in the same cast, giving Seven one of the best last-hit-plus-poke buttons in the game Why this is shown: Seven's laning strengths. Strong evidence
- Paradox closes distance on a cooldown and you have no exit, so in the 0-6 minute window your Guardian is your escape item. Fight with it behind you and inside its range, not beside you: their gap-close has to end somewhere, and ending it inside 116 DPS of Guardian fire is the only punish you own before you have items. The moment the Guardian falls at around 6:00, that safety disappears and the matchup gets materially worse — plan your first defensive purchase for that timing. Why this is shown: Guardians deal 116 DPS to players and become contestable around 6:00; enemy gap-close against a hero with escape 0-1. Strategic
- You have real objective damage, which makes the Guardian your win condition in this lane rather than Paradox's health bar. Guardian resistance scales from +50% down to −50% across roughly the first twelve minutes since 05-22-2026 — it gets softer, not harder, so the pressure you can apply grows every minute from about 6:00. Guardians also have no ability-damage reduction, so spirit works on them at full value. Older guides claiming Guardians toughen over time are wrong. Why this is shown: 05-22-2026 changed Guardian scaling resist from +75%→−50% to +50%→−50%; Guardians have no ability-damage reduction. Verified
- Around 6:00 the Guardians become realistically contestable and players start leaving lane for neutrals — which for you means the map stops being a 1v1 and Paradox gains the thing they are best at, the opening engagement onto a target with no way out. The last two minutes before that transition are your safest window to build a soul lead. After it, treat any position without a teammate in line of sight as a position they can start a fight in. Why this is shown: Laning transitions to the mid game around 6:00 as Guardians become contestable; enemy initiation 3 against a hero with disengage 0-1. Strategic
Mid game
- Their spike — Paradoxical Swap unlock: She gains the game's most decisive single-target displacement and the ability to create a pick out of nothing. Why this is shown: Paradox's power spike timeline. Strong evidence
- Their spike — Time Wall T2 (mid game): 2.3s silence plus +35% friendly weapon damage turns the wall from a defensive tool into a fight-winning one. Why this is shown: Paradox's power spike timeline. Strong evidence
- Their spike — Paradoxical Swap T2: -30s cooldown and +13m cast range let her swap from safety and use the ultimate in most fights rather than one per teamfight cycle. Why this is shown: Paradox's power spike timeline. Strong evidence
- Their spike — Paradoxical Swap T3 (late 40min+): The 7m group swap plus +10% max health damage converts her ultimate into a full teamfight dislocation. Why this is shown: Paradox's power spike timeline. Strong evidence
- Your spike — ult unlock: Storm Cloud immediately converts Seven from a farmer into an objective-control hero; any uncontested cast on a grouped team wins the fight Why this is shown: Seven's power spike timeline. Strong evidence
- Your spike — 1 AP into Static Charge: -20s cooldown brings the stun from 42s to roughly 22s, making stun-into-Storm-Cloud available for nearly every fight Why this is shown: Seven's power spike timeline. Strong evidence
- Your objective damage is the lever in this matchup and the Walker timing is where it pays. Walkers sit around 65% damage resistance early and decay toward −65% by minute 18, so the same rotation that accomplishes nothing at 12:00 kills one outright at 17:00. Each Walker your team destroys also unlocks an extra item slot for the whole team, so the take is a build spike for five other people, not just souls. Remember a Walker is invulnerable unless someone is within 22m. Why this is shown: Walker resist decays from ~65% to −65% by minute 18; each Walker grants a team-wide item slot; Walkers are invulnerable with no enemy inside 22m. Strong evidence
- There is a hard behavioural change at 20:00 in this matchup: respawn goes from 35 to 38 seconds as of 09-16-2026, and you are the hero Paradox can pick off without a fight starting. Three seconds does not sound like much until you price it against the Rift's 7-minute cadence and the Urn at 20 and 25 — a single death now reliably costs you presence at the next objective. Past 20:00, stop taking the solo camp that is one rotation from their side of the map. Why this is shown: 09-16-2026: respawn timer at 20:00 raised 35s → 38s; hero has escape 0-1 against enemy diveThreat 2+. Verified
Teamfights
- Paradox brings enough lockdown that stun sequencing matters. Community reporting describes stun diminishing returns of roughly 10% then 30% inside an 8-second window, applying to stuns only and not to silences, slows, disarms or hexes — so their follow-up chain may be shorter than the first one felt. Treat this as unconfirmed, but it is worth knowing before you burn a cleanse on the opening stun. Why this is shown: Stun diminishing returns reported by community sources; not confirmed in official notes. Uncertain
Positioning
- Paradox decides where you stand, not you. The practical rule is to never hold a position whose failure case is being moved — stand so that being yanked or knocked puts you somewhere survivable rather than inside their whole team. Cover at your back is worth more than cover in front. Why this is shown: Displacement kits convert bad positioning into a kill; failure-case positioning mitigates it. Strong evidence
- Paradox wins by choosing where the fight happens. Take your position before the zoning goes down, not after — once the area is committed you are fighting on their terms, and walking in to contest it is exactly the mistake the kit is built to farm. Why this is shown: Zone-control kits convert space into damage; positioning must precede the cast. Strategic
- When you go for their Walker against a team with Paradox peeling, the 22m rule is your positioning constraint: a Walker is invulnerable while no enemy is within 22m, so somebody has to be inside that ring for any of your damage to count. Being that body is a commitment, not a poke. Backdoor protection also gives the Walker 65% damage reduction and 65 HP/s regeneration until your trooper wave arrives, so going without the wave is not a faster take, it is no take at all. Why this is shown: Walkers are invulnerable with no enemy inside 22m; backdoor protection grants 65% damage reduction and 65 HP/s regen. Strong evidence
Build adjustments
- Against Paradox's crowd control, understand what Debuff Resist actually buys you: it shortens duration, never magnitude. It is excellent against long disables and close to worthless against a short hard slow. Two things it explicitly does not shorten at all are the parry stun and the Knockdown item's stun. Why this is shown: Debuff Resist reduces duration only; parry stun and Knockdown stun are documented exclusions. Verified
- Debuff Reducer (vitality T2) — Paradox gives this team real stuns and hard cc. The standard early buy when the enemy team chains crowd control; it is also the component for Spellbreaker and Unstoppable. Why this is shown: Answers: enemy-hard-cc, enemy-silence, enemy-slow. Verified
- Dispel Magic (vitality T3) — Paradox gives this team real silences and ability denial. Buy when enemy debuffs — slows, silences, anti-heal, disarms, hexes — are what is killing you rather than raw damage. Why this is shown: Answers: enemy-silence, enemy-zone-control, enemy-slow. Verified
- Majestic Leap (vitality T3) — Paradox gives this team real zoning and area denial. Buy to escape ground-based lockdown and to rotate across the map quickly. Why this is shown: Answers: enemy-zone-control, enemy-hard-cc, enemy-dive. Verified
Common mistakes
- The instinct here is to buy Dispel Magic as your answer to Paradox and then find it greyed out at the exact moment you need it. Dispel Magic cannot be cast while you are stunned or asleep, and it cannot remove a stun at all — it purges what comes with the stun, not the stun itself. Against Paradox the item you actually want is the pre-cast kind (Unstoppable, which also cannot be activated once you are already stunned) or the automatic kind (Indomitable, which cleanses the next hard CC with no input from you). Why this is shown: Dispel Magic cannot be used while stunned or asleep and cannot purge stuns; Unstoppable has the same activation restriction. Verified
- The losing pattern against Paradox is deciding to leave, walking to the zipline and finding you cannot attach. Any damage from an enemy hero or objective blocks zipline attachment for 3 seconds, and Paradox has the chip range to keep that 3-second timer rolling indefinitely. Break line of sight first, wait out the lockout, then attach — do not walk to the rope while still taking fire. Why this is shown: Zipline attachment is blocked for 3s after taking enemy hero or objective damage; enemy rangedPoke 2+. Verified
- Players buy Dispel Magic for Paradox and then discover it does nothing about Paradoxical Swap. Dispel Magic purges non-ultimate negative effects only — anything sourced from an ultimate is outside its scope entirely. Work out which of Paradox's disables come off abilities and which come off the ult before you spend 3,200: the ability-sourced ones are purgeable, the ult is not, and for the ult you need either Unstoppable pre-cast or the discipline not to be there. Why this is shown: Dispel Magic cannot purge ultimate-sourced debuffs; enemy cc 3 with a hard disable tag. Verified
- The specific error is walking into Paradox's area denial after it is already down, because your team is in there and you feel late. You are slow enough that entering a committed zone is a one-way decision — you will be inside it for its full duration, not for the two seconds you intended. Arrive before the zone or arrive from the other side of it; arriving into it is how this matchup is lost even when your team wins the fight. Why this is shown: Enemy zone-control against a hero with mobility 0-1; committed entry cannot be aborted. Strategic

Sources and method for this page
Paradox's kit and counterplay were compiled from 5 sources, cross-checked for patch 09-16-2026. Threat ratings compare this pairing against Seven's own baseline win rate rather than a flat 50%, because ranking by raw win rate produces the wrong answer for heroes whose overall win rate is not 50%.
